Bunding and Secondary Containment

Plan containment around the stored substance, container arrangement, drainage and applicable local rules.

What to assess

  • The largest container and total stored volume
  • Material compatibility and bund integrity
  • Valves, pipework, loading points and drainage
  • Rainwater management and safe removal of contaminated contents
  • Inspection, maintenance and emergency access

Capacity is only one part

Published guidance commonly uses capacity benchmarks, but the applicable requirement varies by substance, container, location and UK jurisdiction. Confirm current rules with the relevant regulator or a competent adviser before relying on a design.

Keep containment effective

Inspect for cracks, damaged seals, blocked drainage and accumulated water. Record findings and arrange safe cleaning or repair when the bund cannot perform as intended.
